Data and tools we use
Most of our work runs on free, open data. These are good places to start.
- NASA GLOBE Observer: a free app for collecting land cover, tree, cloud, and mosquito habitat observations anywhere in the world.
- NEON Data Portal: airborne lidar, hyperspectral imagery, and field data from 81 ecological sites across the United States.
- Google Earth Engine: cloud computing with decades of Landsat, Sentinel, and MODIS imagery, free for research and education.
- NASA Earthdata Search: NASA satellite data, including GEDI forest structure and GRACE water storage.
- USGS EarthExplorer: Landsat, aerial photos, and declassified historical satellite imagery from the 1960s onward.
- OpenTopography: high-resolution lidar and elevation data with online processing.
- Florida Earth Engine example library: our runnable Earth Engine scripts for Florida, organized by remote sensing topic.
- GeoDI Lab on GitHub: open code from the lab, including the ask-globe AI assistant for GLOBE data.

Subscribe to one or two email lists and check a few job boards each week. Most graduate assistantships, postdocs, and early-career jobs in our fields are posted here.

- ECOLOG-L (Ecological Society of America): a long-running ecology listserv with jobs, graduate positions, and fellowships. Choose ecolog-l when you subscribe; a daily digest is available.
- Earth Science Jobs Network (ES_Jobs_Net): a free list from the Earth Science Women’s Network with 100 to 150 Earth science job announcements a month, open to everyone.
Job boards
- AAG Jobs in Geography: faculty, postdoc, and professional jobs from the American Association of Geographers.
- AGU Career Center: Earth and space science jobs, including remote sensing and Earth science informatics.
